I Want to Work! The campaign for advocating for the right to work for persons with disabilities continues!

The United Nations declared December 3rd the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year, we celebrate this Day with a campaign to equalize the opportunities of persons with disabilities and advocate their right to work.

Our campaign for advocating for the right to work called “Social while physically distant” has been going on for several years, and this year the main theme is still the right to work for persons with disabilities, called “I Want to Work!”

For this purpose, to show the public, and especially, employers, how persons with disabilities can work, and what kind of support they need, we recorded two videos about our work model.

The first one relates to preparation for work provided by the DIP, through programs of social services, work-occupational half-day stay, and psychosocial support.

The second one is about the model of work with support that we create in our socially entrepreneurial company DIP lab d.o.o., which was founded by the DIP. The DIP lab was established to set an example for employers on how to successfully employ persons with disabilities.

Our heartfelt thanks go to our Silvia, and all our members, who made the effort to record these videos. Thank you to our business partners, who gave us consent to record on their business premises, and consent to the use of video recordings of statements about cooperation with us.

The main messages that you will find in our two videos are based on the approach to persons with disabilities in the social model – it is the environment that needs to be adapted to a person with disabilities so that we can create the necessary conditions for equalizing opportunities. The emphasis is on the model of work for persons with disabilities, in which we include persons with disabilities through at least 3 stages:

  1. inclusion in rehabilitation and training for life in the community through programs of social services of residence and psychosocial support for the whole family
  2. inclusion in training and rehabilitation programs for working in different jobs in accordance with the capabilities of each person
  3. assessment of the need for professional support in the work for each individual person and job and training for a specific job, reference to the assessment of the remaining work efficiency.

Without a comprehensive approach and support in the approach to training and creating conditions for the work of persons with disabilities, we cannot provide a chance for them to realize their full potential and get a quality life in the community.

A publication on the right to work with simple instructions on how to successfully include persons with disabilities in the workplace is also being prepared, which is a call to employers to create an inclusive and socially responsible business climate, a call to persons with disabilities to change the quality of their lives. Support to employers and persons with disabilities is provided by the expert team of the DIP.

At the same time, it is an invitation to companies to do business with our company, the DIP lab, to increase the value of their business.

The project I Want to Work! is financed by the City of Rijeka, ACI d.d., and is part of the 3-year program of providing social services for persons with disabilities “Friends Daycare Centre”, which is co-financed by the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the City of Rijeka and ACI.
