On Friday, October 28th, 2022, a press conference was held in Poreč, where the Poreč Public Open University, together with its partners, the Dante Adult Education Institution from Rijeka, the Poreč Society for the Disabled Persons, the Research and Support Society (DIP) from Rijeka, and the Polidor camp, presented the project EDUKOSI.TURIZAM – EDUCATION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN TOURISM, and upcoming activities aimed at increasing the employment of persons with disabilities in tourism were announced.
“In the introductory presentation, the director of the School, Snježana Radetić, reminded that the EDUKOSI.TURIZAM project was financed from the European Social Fund, within the framework of the Call for Improvement of access of vulnerable groups to the labor market in the tourism and hospitality sector II, and that the total value of the project is HRK 1,240,441.74, which is at the same time one hundred percent of the necessary project costs for the planned 20 months of implementation. POUP is one of the 14 project holders with whom the Ministry of Tourism and Sports signed financing contracts in March of this year. Thus, two such valuable projects have arrived in Istria.
Through the EDUKOSI.TURIZAM project, 110 unemployed persons with disabilities (PWDs) have the opportunity to participate free of charge in workshops on various interesting topics, which will be conducted in the area of Istria and Primorsko-goranska County. Invitations have been sent to associations whose members are PWDs, to apply for participation, and the workshops will be held at the premises of those associations that express interest. However, all those interested who are not members of the association can also contact us individually, via e-mail [email protected], or phone number 091 4322 648.
Our partners are high-quality and professional people with many years of experience of dedicated work in the field of providing social services for PWDs and in the field of education, and they are available to PWDs for the next year, in order to strengthen themselves and better prepare for employment”, said project manager Anita Pilat. from Poreč University.
She went on to emphasize that retired PWDs are also potentially employable persons, who also have the right to participate in the project and through socializing and conversations with psychologists to get new inspirations, find out about employment opportunities and make the most of their potential and improve their knowledge and skills.
“The goal of the workshops is to provide information and advice on work and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, career counseling and professional guidance,” said psychologist Karmen Vučetić from the Society for Research and Support (DIP), adding that the greatest focus will be on the development of communication skills, conflict resolution and organizational skills.
By the way, the Society for Research and Support Rijeka has been operating since 2014, and according to psychologist Bernard Šešo, their goal is to provide psycho-social support services and a half-day stay to train and employ young PWDs and prepare them for an independent life.
In the further presentation of the partners, Andrej Marušić, director of the Dante adult education institution, emphasized that he is satisfied that their institution has the opportunity to participate in this project and contribute to increasing social awareness of the needs of people with disabilities. The institution with three decades of work experience will contribute by organizing motivational workshops in cooperation with the HZZ, as well as in the implementation of other project activities in cooperation with partners.
The Poreč Society for the Disabled Persons is responsible for the organization of workshops in the Istrian County. Lorena Rajko, assistant in work with PWDs, pointed out that the society has about 450 members, and their role in the project is organization and cooperation with similar institutions in the Istrian County, as well as providing support and information to all those interested in conducting workshops, whether in the premises of Istrian associations , the premises of the Company or the premises of the University in Poreč, all with the ultimate goal of increasing the employment of PWDs in the tourism and hospitality sector.
In addition to conducting workshops for 110 PWDs, project manager Anita Pilat announced other activities that are planned for the coming period. Some of them include the opportunity for 12 unemployed PWDs to complete an online sales and digital marketing education program, a field of work that is growing as a modern trend in the tourism industry. In addition, the announcement also includes activities aimed at employers, where, through the organization of round tables and informative lectures, efforts will be made to affirm the employment of persons with disabilities and, in addition to legal obligations and rights, to bring the life and needs of persons with disabilities closer to employers.
The partner Polidor camp from Funtana, contributes to all this, as a representative of the employers in the project. Giulia Ukušić Šalja expressed great satisfaction with the opportunity to participate and develop a project for the needs of PWDs and their integration into the labor market, as well as satisfaction with the fact that they are able to transfer their experiences and contribute to the project by providing information about the needs of employers. The PWD education program also includes practical classes at the employer’s workplace, and on this occasion they are involved as mentors to the participants of the educational program in the practical classes.
The digital platform www.burzaradaosi.com is being launched as a link between PWDs and employers through the project, which will equally benefit employers looking for workers and PWDs looking for employment.
It was especially emphasized that, according to the report of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, there are 511,281 persons with disabilities in Croatia, which is 12.4 percent of the total population, of which 13,209 persons are in Istria County.
“One project cannot change the situation, but EDUKOSI.TURIZAM is not the first project we have implemented for persons with disabilities, but rather a continuation of our efforts to help improve their competitiveness on the labor market and ultimately increase their quality of life through educational programs. Persons with disabilities face unequal opportunities in education and employment, as the most important conditions for an independent life. The participation of PWDs in the world of work is an essential prerequisite for their social (re)integration. Therefore, we believe that this project can contribute to a higher quality and more fulfilling life for persons with disabilities”, concluded the director of the School, Snježana Radetić.
