WHAT ARE AUTHOR’s COMICS AND ILLUSTRATIONS – CAUSES, RESULTS, CONSEQUENCES

Author’s comics and illustration are the result of creative needs, efforts, satisfaction and dissatisfaction of one person who independently creates the textual part of a comic or illustration (script, dialogues, …) and chooses a graphic approach that best suits the personality and/or narrative needs of the author or a comic. As the author’s comic and illustration almost inevitably arise from the author’s personal rational and/or irrational creative needs, they are freer in the author’s expression in terms of graphics and topics than classical or ready-made comics and illustrations. The motives for making such comics and illustrations are not exclusively for commercial unlike ready-made comics or illustrations whose creation is primarily conditioned by the pursuit of profit. Of course, there are financially successful author’s comics and illustrations, but at the beginning of their careers, authors of such comics and illustrations don’t expect much financial gain, until their drawing manuscript becomes interesting to clients.

It is a continuous process of pushing the boundaries of thinking and understanding what comics and illustration really are. In this way, the expressive possibilities of storytelling change with a combination of drawings and text, and thus expectations of the end users of the art product.

The author of such comics or illustrations is responsible for what is drawn and written. Therefore, the range of covered topics is wider, which basically depends on the author’s breadth of interests.

Note: Comics and illustration are related artistic disciplines, and due to the above factual situation, it is quite natural to connect them within the same project or exhibition. Furthermore, many authors work in both of these areas of artistic activity.

THE ROOTS OF THE COLONY OF AUTHORS COMICS AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF KVARNER

Similar colonies (then called “comic workshops”) were held as part of the Opatija Op. Art Festival in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and as part of the Opatija Barufs in 2011.

Most of the participants were closely connected with the Internet platform Komikaze led by Ivana Armanini (there are also printed editions) and with the non-formal comic group Emotions Emission.

Many authors of comics, illustrations and animated films, as well as artists (Ivana Armanini, Anna Ehrlemark, Igor Hofbauer, Dunja Janković, Irena Jukić-Pranjić, Ivan Mišković, Matija Pisačić and Celestina Vičević) and students of the Academy of Applied Arts from Rijeka contribute to the work of the workshops.

In 2007, a photocopied fanzine Quisisana – Comic Book Therapy was made, in which the works created during the workshops in 2006 and 2007 were published. (DS)
