Culture and technical culture

CULTURE AND TECHNICAL CULTURE

“Culture provides our identities with thick contents that we can try to reject, but we cannot simply ignore or deny them. By largely determining our identities, culture is constitutive of our personality”. (Mesić, M. 2007), https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/257792.  Culture is a way of life (Parekh, B., 2000). Culture is transmitted through symbols/language, norms, values, institutions and statuses. Although the basis for the maintenance of a certain culture is the strengthening of solidarity and its foundation on general acceptance, it can also be a source of conflict. From this aspect and the purpose of our activity, we contribute to specific goals and nurture specific expressions.

We want to contribute to a culture of solidarity, regardless of differences, to values such as freedom, tolerance, human rights and a non-violent society.

Culture in EU policies, contributes to these same goals, so the key topics are: supporting cultural heritage, socioeconomic value of culture, strengthening equality between sexes/genders and strengthening diversity. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-8-2018-0499_HR.html.  https://culture.ec.europa.eu/policies/strategic-framework-for-the-eus-cultural-policy.  In public policies for young people, EU policy strengthens the competences of young people, so the goals of public policies are directed towards the availability of culture for young people, strengthening the digital and creative potential of young people. https://youth.europa.eu/strategy/european-youth-goals_en

KVARNER COLONY OF AUTHORS’ COMICS AND ILLUSTRATIONS

WHAT ARE THE AUTHORS’ COMICS AND ILLUSTRATIONS? – CAUSES, RESULTS, CONSEQUENCES

The authors’ comics and illustrations are the result of the creative needs, efforts, satisfaction and dissatisfaction of one person who independently creates the textual part of the comic or illustration (script, dialogues…) and chooses the graphic approach that best suits the personality and/or storytelling needs of the author of the comic or illustration. As authors’ comics and illustrations almost necessarily arise from the personal rational and/or irrational creative needs of the author, they are freer in terms of authorial expression, both graphically and in terms of the topics they deal with, compared to classic or ready-made comics and illustrations. The motives for creating such comics and illustrations are not exclusively of a commercial nature, unlike ready-made comics or illustrations, the creation of which is conditioned primarily by the pursuit of profit. Of course, there are also financially successful authors’ comics and illustrations, however, the authors of such comics and illustrations at the beginning of their careers, as a rule, expect almost no financial gain, until the moment when their cartoon manuscript becomes interesting to the public.

It is a continuous process of pushing the boundaries of thinking and understanding of what comics and illustration really are. In this way, the expressive possibilities of storytelling through a combination of drawings and text change, and thus, gradually, the expectations of the end users of the art product. The author of such a comic or illustration is responsible for what is drawn and written. Because of this, the spectrum of topics covered is wider, which basically depends on the breadth of interests of the author himself. Note: Comics and illustrations are related artistic disciplines, and due to the stated factual situation, it is quite natural to connect them within the same project or exhibit. Furthermore, many authors work in both of the above-mentioned areas of artistic activity.

THE ROOTS OF THE KVARNER COLONY OF THE AUTHORS’ COMICS AND ILLUSTRATIONS

Similar colonies (then called comic workshops) were held as part of Opatija Open Art festival in 2006, 2007 and 2008. and as part of the Opatija Heritage in 2011. Most of the participants were closely connected with the Internet platform Komikaze, hosted by Ivana Armanini (there are also printed editions), and with the informal comics group Emission of Emotions. Many authors of comic books, illustrations and animated films and artists (Ivana Armanini, Anna Ehrlemark, Igor Hofbauer, Dunja Janković, Irena Jukić – Pranjić, Ivan Mišković, Matija Pisačić and Celestina Vičević) and students of the Academy of Applied Arts from Rivers. 2007 a photocopied fanzine Quisisana – Comic Therapy was created, in which the works created during the workshops in 2006 and 2007 were published. (DS).

The artistic director of the Kvarner colony of author comics is Damir Stenfl, with artistic collaborators: Matija Pisačić, Damir Stojnić and Korina Hunjak. The head of the program/department is Marta Berčić, and the team members are other employees and volunteers of the DIP.

About the colonies held so far:
