We’ve set up an exhibition of the works of authors of comics and illustration and we’ve opened the 1st Colony of authors comics and illustration of Kvarner. Thanks to everyone participating in this project that bursts with energy and enthusiasm. Thanks to the authors, especially Damir Steinfl who was burning so he could, in the best possible way, show the richness of the comic scene. But also thanks to DIP’s team Nela, Karmen and Bernard and Barbara Babačić, without whom everything would not be possible, and thanks to all that support us. We’ve opened the Colony with the support of the Mayor of the City of Rijeka, Mr. Vojko Obersnel, and financial support was given to us by the Primorsko-goranska County. We hope that it will start a wheel for all comic scene actors and illustrators.

We have gathered about thirty authors of comics and illustrations of different generations and styles, so this exhibition represents a retrospective of Croatian creativity in this art form. Their works will expose one of the most important Croatian authors such as Dubravko Mataković, Miroslav Sekulić, Dušan Gačić, Danijel Žeželj, Darko Macan, Darko Kreča, Matija Pisačić, Irena Jukić Pranjić, Ana Gezi, Ivana Armanini, Simon Bogojević Naratha, Miroslav Nemeth, Branka Nikolić Hollingsworth, Sonja Gašperov i Ivan Marušić. Rijeka’s authors are: Ivan Mišković, Korina Hunjak, Damir Stojnić i Dragan Kordić. Their works will represent some new generation of authors such as Sara Divjak, Mihaela Erceg and many more authors whose works are published in OHOHO fanzine. In addition to the above, here are also the authors who participate in a project Komikaze whose leader is Ivana Armanini and authors from the project Lavanderman that is led by Toni Favero.
According to the authors’ own choice, we have placed their works in the industrial interior of the former warehouse, where many cultural and artistic programs have been held so far as part of the Rijeka 2020 EPK.
The main goal of the exhibition and colony is to promote comics and illustration, encourage and valorize artistic creation and to shape the audience with the aim of encouraging the development of creative industries in these areas of artistic expression. This first Colony has the purpose to promote Croatian authors and to increase the visibility of artistic work of Croatian authors. The artistic director of the Colony is Damir Steinfl, the author of comics, who has been leading a children’s comic book workshop “Create a new frame!” in Rijeka and Opatija for more than 10 years as part of the work of Društvo za istraživanje i potporu (DIP). The colony is co-financed by the Primorsko-goranska County.
WHAT ARE AUTHOR’S COMIC AND ILLUSTRATION – CAUSES, RESULTS, CONSEQUENCES
Author’s comic and illustration are the result of creative needs, effort, satisfaction and dissatisfaction of one person who independently creates the textual part of comic or illustration (script, dialogues…) and chooses graphic approach that best suits the personality and/or narrative need of the author of the comic or illustration.
As the author’s comic and illustration almost necessarily arise from the personal rational and/or irrational creative need of the author, unlike classical or ready-made comics and illustration, the yare freer in the author’s expression both in terms of graphics and topics. The motives for making such comics and illustrations are not exclusively of a commercial nature unlike ready-made comics or illustrations whose creation is conditioned primarily by the pursuit of profit. Of course, there are also financially successful author’s comics and illustrations, but authors of such comics and illustration at the beginning of their career do not expect almost any financial gain, until the moment when their drawing maunscript becomes interesting to clients. It is a continuous process of pushing the boundaries of thinking and understanding what comics and illustration actually are. In this way, the expressive possibilities of storytelling change with a combination of drawings and text, and thus gradually the expectations of the users of the art product.
The author of such a comic or illustration is responsible for himself for what is drawn and written. Therefore, the range of topics is wider, which basically depends on the breadth of interest of the author.
Note: Comics and illustration are related artistic disciplines, and due to the stated factual situation, it is quite natural to connect them within the same project or exhibition. Furthermore, many authors work in both of these areas of artistic activity.
THE ROOTS OF THE COLONY OF AUTHOR’S COMIC AND ILLUSTRATION OF KVARNER
Similar colonies (then they were called comic workshops) were held as part of Opatijski Art Festival in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and also as a part of Opatijski barufi in 2011.
Most of participants were closely related to an Internet platform Komikaze led by Ivana Armanini (there are also printed edition) and to non-formaln comic-group Emisija emocija.
Their contribution to the work of the workshop gave many authors of comic, illustration and animated movie and artists (Ivana Armanini, Anna Ehrlemark, Igor Hofbauer, Dunja Janković, Irena Jukić – Pranjić, Ivan Mišković, Matija Pisačić i Celestina Vičević), so as students of Academy of applied arts in Rijeka.
In 2007 was made photocopied fanzine Quisisana – Comic Book Therapy, in which the works created during the workshops in 2006 and 2007 were published. (DS)
