We invite you to the opening of the exhibition of works (comics) created at the first and second Kvarner colony of author comics and illustrations, in Rijeka, on Thursday, December 8th, 2022. at 19:00 in Exportdrvo.
The exhibition will be open until December 22nd, 2022. every working day, both Saturday and Sunday, from 18:00 to 21:00 in Exportdrvo.
DIP is the organizer of the Kvarner Colony, and the artistic director is Damir Steinf, with the support of Matija Pisačić and Damir Stojnić. The DIP volunteers, mostly students of the University of Rijeka, who will volunteer at the exhibition. The exhibition is part of the program of the Kvarner Colony of author comics and illustrations, which offers a series of cultural events throughout the year.
The exhibition will present the works of male and female authors created in the first and second Colonies, a total of 130 printed works that represent an artistic wealth precisely because of the specificity of the space, time and technique of creation. The audience can connect the works with Rijeka and the Primorsko-goranska County, Rijeka and Opatija, as well as with the authors. This exhibition is specific, because it shows the works of male and female authors, who worked in the same place, together, but without a common theme. They were given complete freedom to choose the topic and work technique.
The poster for this exhibition (12/2022) is signed by Matija Pisačić, from Zagreb, while the posters for previous exhibitions (3/2022, 2021 and 2020) and the cover of the catalog of works from the opening exhibition of Colonia, 2020 are signed by a “local” author from Opatija, artistic director of the Kvarner colony, Damir Steinfl.

The Kvarner colony is co-financed from 2020 by the Primorsko-goranska County and the City of Opatija, the printing of the catalog was co-financed by Poslovni klub PartneRI and the DIP, from their own funds.
The exhibition also has a humanitarian character, as a donor auction – an online auction of printed works on Facebook – will be organized during the duration of the exhibition, and will last until 22.12. 2022 at 6:00 p.m. when it was created live in Exportdrvo until 9:00 p.m. until the closing of the exhibition and auction. Citizens will then be able to take over the works for which they competed (highest price), and the donation will be donated to the SEC for organizational costs (reprinting and other costs) and regular work of the SEC with disabled people, as well as material costs for the authors.
With this Colony, we nurture the author’s comics, which does not exclude the high commercial value of the works of individual authors. Thus, we offer an exhibition without censorship, the only censorship is the self-censorship of the author, without coercion. Rijeka thus offers new and freer spaces for creativity and a sense of belonging to the community where one works and shares one’s own window into the world with the audience. The works are either groups of boards that represent the comic or individual boards are works on their own.
Organizer’s note: The content and interpretation of the papers are the sole responsibility of the authors. The organizer therefore provides the following information: “For a small part of the works, it can be estimated that the content is not suitable for certain groups, for example for children. Parents are responsible for visiting the exhibition.”
Message to the public: This is an exhibition without censorship, which is a rarity, so be open to a free and critical experience of the author’s comic, because it demands it.
The Kvarner colony of author comics and illustrations began to be held in 2020. year with a large exhibition of works, according to the selection of about 30 authors of comics and illustrations, from all over Croatia, created in the last 10 years.
The challenge caused by the COVID19 pandemic, i.e. the inability to bring authors to Rijeka due to pandemic protection measures, to create new works together in Rijeka, brought a new solution – a new cultural product, an exhibition of comics and illustrations, with the idea of presenting the rich Croatian the author’s comic scene. It turned out to be bigger than we could have imagined, and we gave the audience the opportunity to see in one place what has been happening on the comics scene in the last 10 years. It was the first cultural event of its kind for Rijeka.
After we collected the works in the catalog of works, in the printed edition, (June 2021) in order to preserve and document the work of our authors in one place, at the end of 2021 a meeting of the authors was finally held in Rijeka. The audience had the opportunity to participate in the work, through meetings with the authors, and it is especially important that the students of the Academy of Applied Arts had the opportunity to work together with these renowned authors. Immediately after the first meeting, cooperation was established with the Croatian Comics Association, and it was agreed that a 24-hour comic drawing in the DIP will be held. DIP was the host of this competition, it opened its doors to facilitate the creation of the space in which we operate and where the 1st Colony was held.

After the first Colony, we started organizing the second one, and we started with the opening of the exhibition of the works of authors exhibited at the first major exhibition in 2020, in order to introduce the audience to the participants, authors we invited to the second Colony. In the SKC Gallery (Palach) we also opened this exhibition with the participation of some of the authors, so the audience had the opportunity to meet them live. To the second Colony, we invited some authors from the participants of the first Colony as well as new ones in order to create new synergies. The second Colony was held at the beginning of April 2022. After that, the DIP again hosted a 24-hour drawing event, which is organized by the Croatian Comics Association, and once again aroused the great interest of artists from the region.

The Kvarner colony was born out of the need to promote and valorize author’s comics and for the Primorsko-goranska County and Rijeka to get a cultural space for the work of comic book and illustration authors. Colonies are an extremely productive artistic space for creating new ideas, connecting artists and creating new joint projects. At the same time, it is a cultural and social space for creating an audience and developing creative industries.
